The Tukkies Women's Rugby team will play a number of friendly games as pre-matches for the Intervarsity games played by the men. The first match will be played on the 1st of March against a Cheetahs invitation side. The second match will be played against a Lions invitation side on the 15th of March. Both games will be played at LC de Villiers sports grounds at the University of Pretoria. The specific times must still be confirmed.

The game are organised to fall in with Intervarsity matches and allows for much more exposure for the Women's game. As a number of the other Universities don't have Women's teams, we will be playing against provincial invitation sides from the areas close to the universities the men's team play against.

Times for the specific matches will be added as soon as the information becomes available.

Women's rugby in need of support
Posted on Monday 24 September 2007 - 12:11:44 by technical
Jocelyn Creed started playing rugby in 2002 with Villagers Rugby Club. She played Western Province rugby for three seasons. Then she was appointed to manage Villagers ladies' team and the Western Province ladies' team during their season.

Creed and her friends, Tally Kunz and Roby Walker, noticed the lack of attention paid to women's rugby and opened Ntombi Rugby Academy in May last year. The academy, based in Cape Town, focuses on introducing girls to rugby and they work with 40 girls between the ages of six and 11.

In South African rugby women are allowed to join clubs only at the age of 18. Last year the women's rugby team played in the World Cup in Canada for the first time. They lost all their games. Creed believes the reason for this is the lack of experience in the team.

Tukkies are Women's Club League Champions
Posted on Sunday 09 September 2007 - 12:24:04 by technical
Even after Tukkies was forced to play without five of their star players, Tukkies, sponsored by Ice-Man herbal cooling gel, managed to secure the Blue Bull's club League Championship by winning 22-12 on Saturday (halftime score 10-5).

In a match played in extreme heat at the L C de Villiers stadium at Pretoria University, the girls from Tukkies showed that they were up for the challenge, playing without a number of their first choice players, Yolanda Meiring, Veronica Malantswane, Pulani Motluong, Gesa Kock and Fida Kat, were frozen by the Blue Bulls, even though the next Blue Bulls game is only played in October.

The match was a tough encounter characteristic of a final, with a number of mistakes caused by nerves in the first period of the match. Tukkies with their much lighter pack dominated the first half, by placing pressure on Pretoria, with clever kicks and aggressive defence. This led to a number of knock ons and a relatively large number of scrums. Even in this set phase, the smaller girls from Tukkies had the upper hand, due to their superior technique and by working as a unit. Tukkies also dominated the lineouts with Natasha Verwey, a tower of strength at number two. During the first half Tukkies had a number of opportunities that they could not convert into points, as a number of the back-line players had to play out of position. Even without making use of all their opportunities, Tukkies took a lead of 10-0. Just before half-time Pretoria scored a try to make it 10-5 at the break.

After the break Tukkies scored once more through a well timed run by Antoinette de Lange. During the middle section of the second half, the girls from Pretoria fought back. Pretoria was camped on the try-line of Tukkies for a period of about 15 minutes in the middle section of the half and finally produced their second try to take the score to 15-12. It appears that this effort was the final effort from the girls from Pretoria, as Tukkies dominated territory and possession for the last period of the game. Their efforts were rewarded with another try in the final minutes of the game, scored by Boniswa Mahlangu and converted by Natasha Louw.

With this effort, Tukkies also ensured a place in the national club championships that will be held in Goodwood in the Cape from 21 to 24 September.

Club League Final
Posted on Thursday 06 September 2007 - 14:00:16 by technical
The Blue Bulls women's club league final will be held on Saturday the 8th of September at the LC de Villiers sports stadium at Pretoria University. The game will start at 14:00.

After a prolonged league championship, where a number of games were postponed by the Union, some of the other clubs, or its representatives, the final will take place between Tukkies and Pretoria. Harlequins, current holder of the league trophy, withdrew from the league at the last moment, as it is alleged that their players should be rested for the provincial championship semi-final. At the same time a number of Tukkies players are not allowed to play for the team on Saturday, due to the same reason.

Pretoria on the other hand will not be affected to the same degree, as only one of their player's are "frozen" for the provincial championship. This means a near full strength Pretoria team will take on the girls from Tukkies, who are affected by the "freezing" of a number of their stars.

At this stage Tukkies is the ONLY club in the League developing new talent, while any of the other clubs would have been forced to withdraw, had the same amount of players not been available. Tukkies will therefore be testing a number of new players in the final of the League championship.

We ask all supporters to join us on Saturday at L C de Villiers to support the girls for this final game of the league season. Let's bring the title back to where it belongs.
