A good year for Tukkies Women's Rugby
Posted on Tuesday 30 December 2008 - 12:49:12 by technical
After a year where many senior provincial players left the Blue Bulls, either due to reaching the end of their careers or due to moving to other provinces, a completely new Blue Bulls squad had to be built from the existing clubs. With the demise of a number of Women's clubs the amount of players available for the Blue Bulls Women's team were very limited.

Due to their dominance in the local club scene, the Tukkies Women's team contributed most of the players to the provincial side. The following players from Tukkies represented the Blue Bulls side in the official inter-provincial tournament. Antoinette de Lange, Jennifer Modiba, Boniswa Mahlangu, Caroline Makhanya, Veronica Malantswane, Yolanda Meiring, Pulane Motluong, Mokgethi Maleka, Ilse van Staden, Cindy Cant, Sarah Mahlangu, Sunette Paich, Portia Malinga, Yolandi Marais, Nicolene Lubbe, Natasha Louw, Ingrid Botha, Hilary Miller and Marie-Eve Brindamour-Carignan, making it 19 players in total. (Other Tukkies players that represented the Blue Bulls in non-official SARU tournaments include Esna Rossouw, Tanya Meyer, Pearl Mano)

These players represented the Blue Bulls in various tournaments throughout the year, which includes a mini-provincial tournament played in Bloemfontein, the inter-provincial Women's Championship, the inter-provincial sevens tournament and the Nelson Mandela Bay sevens tournament. With the large number of new players representing the provincial squad, the players performed well above expectations, by winning the Bloemfontein tournament, reaching the semi-final in the Women's inter-provincial Championship, (just losing to the current champions). Reaching the final of the inter-provincial sevens tournament. (Losing in the final to what is basically the National sevens squad that will represent SA in the 2009 sevens world cup event). And finishing third in the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens tournament, after the Springboks and Uganda. (The Blue Bulls team consisting mainly of forwards, was also the only team to score any points against the National team, with a 33-19 loss against the Springboks in the pool stages of the tournament.)

The team for the Nelson Mandela Bay tournament also included an overseas visitor, Floor Hooijman, who only started playing rugby a few weeks before the tournament and performed admirably at the tournament and contributing to the team's success.

Tukkies Women's Team beat Pretoria
Posted on Tuesday 01 April 2008 - 14:10:09 by technical
The girls from Tukkies beat the Pretoria team with relative ease again on Saturday, with the final score 28-0. (Half-time score 14-0)

The match started at a fast pace, with the girls from Tukkies leading 14-10 after only ten minutes of play. At the start of the match the girls from Tukkies already made their intentions clear as they spread the ball wide from the onset. The backs broke through the defensive line of Pretoria at will and scored two quick tries within the first ten minutes of play. After ten minutes the game was interrupted by a thunder storm and the girls had to leave the field for approximately half an hour.

After their return to the field, their rhythm was somewhat upset and they failed to increase their lead for the rest of the half. A few marginal calls for forward passes also did not help and the score could have been much more were it not for these calls.

The team from Pretoria improved their performance from the first game and chose to attack with the forwards. With this tactic of using their bigger forwards, they managed to gain some ground in the first half, but were never in a position to capitalise and score points.

At the start of the second half the Tuks girls started to regain their rhythm and scored another two converted tries. With a much stronger defence around the rucks and mauls in the second half, they were also able to drive the team from Pretoria back at times, or keep them at bay for long enough to turn the ball over.

About fifteen minutes into the half, a number of substitutes were used, many of whom were new players. This was to make the new players used to the game. These girls also performed admirably, as they were able to keep Pretoria away from their try line for the rest of the game too. This also means that after the first three games of the season, the Tukkies girls have scored a total of 145 points, while conceding only 7.

Ladies Tuks beat Cheetahs convincingly (69-0)
Posted on Monday 03 March 2008 - 09:56:06 by technical
Played at 13:00, the heat was the toughest part of all the player's day. Starting out cloudy but hot, the sun broke through to make conditions even more challenging for the players.

The game started of with a bang as the Tukkies team followed up the kick-off with purpose, causing an early knock-on. The girls from Pretoria showed they meant business in the first scrum, driving the Freestaters back with ease. This pattern was followed in most of the early scrums and showing their dominance in this set phase. The pressure on the girls from the Free State was immense and this led to a large number of turn-overs in the loose as Tukkies was on the front foot for most of the game.

In these conditions, the backs were supplied with a stream of good ball. Even while lining up too shallow and placing their own back-line under pressure the Tukkies girls were able to break though the defence of the Freestaters scoring at regular intervals.
